When Angels Die

When angels die and their rags are on my feet.
When angels die and leave me incomplete.
When angels die they leave me hanging round
Like the thorns that fill up your crown.

When angels die.
When angels die.
When angels die.
When angels die.

When angels cry and they look into your eyes.
When angels fall on down you know you've touched the ground.
When angels break their wings you're sure of so many things
Like the lanterns that light up all your dreams.

When angels die.
When angels die.
When angels die.
When angels die.

When angels die walk around and they kiss the holy ground
When angels hold you in their arms you can be sure you'll never come to harm.
When angels wet their lips you know they still turn tricks
Like all the girls you know from your home town.

When angels die.
When angels die.
When angels die.
When angels die.

Boutique

Her daddy's a painter, he belongs to the Academy
She paints her house in several shades of green
She lives her life under a tarpaulin screen
She never fails to get her round in, she's pretty keen.

A bottle of smoke and it ain't no joke
Gold top Les Paul by the swimming pool
One lie too many that was all it took
Yea, I could read her like I read a book
In her boutique.

Precious memories keep her alive she says
Like the last time she kicked you out of her bed
Yea, tousled and tattered
If you've got any more thoughts they're gonna be your last
Your mind's a mess so why don't you just confess.

A bottle of smoke and it ain't no joke
Gold top Les Paul by the swimming pool
One lie too many that was all it took
Yea, I could read her like I read a book
In her boutique.

You know your luck is fading fast
Your telephone calls are really such a blast
Yea, I pretend to be happy every time you call
I really wish I wasn't speaking to you at all.

A bottle of smoke and it ain't no joke
Gold top Les Paul by the swimming pool
One lie too many that was all it took
Yea, I could read her like I read a book
In her boutique.

And pretty soon your boutique will have to close it's doors
'Cause no one rich goes there and you ain't got nothing for the poor
Your boyfriend's gone blind, at least he's had some good luck
At least he doesn't have to look at you that much.

A bottle of smoke and it ain't no joke
Gold top Les Paul by the swimming pool
One lie too many that was all it took
Yea, I could read her like I read a book.

In her boutique
In her boutique
In her boutique
In her boutique.

What Am I Living For?

What am I living for if not for you?
What am I living for if not for you?
What am I living for if not for you?
What am I living for if not for you?

What am I living for if my dreams can't come true?
What am I living for if I can't be with you?
What am I living for if I'm not with you?
What am I living for if not for you?

What am I living for if I can't be with you?
Why am I sleeping at all if I can't sleep with you?
What am I living for if not for you?
What am I living for if I can't be with you?
Oh.

What am I living for if I can't be with you?
Why am I living at all if my dreams can't come true?
What am I living for if not for you?
Why am I living at all if I can't be with you?

What am I living for if not for you?
What am I living for if I can't be with you?
What am I living for if not for you?
What am I living for if not for you?
Oh.

Liquor, Guns & Ammo

Been up for twenty days now
There's thirst dripping off my soul
So many empty bottles
They've helped me down this road
Bought myself a cowboy shirt
From a store in Charlottesville
And a song from a girl
Who needed the dollar bill.

Now the only thing a man needs
Is a woman to hold him close
Dress up in brocade and trim
And write him lover's notes
There's not so much a man can do
But at least he can carry a gun
Stand up straight and right and true
And do a job well done.

Liquor, guns and ammo
They made a man of me
I've been this way
Since I began to breathe.
Liquor, guns and ammo
They mean so much to me
I've been this way
Since I began to see.

Headed into Atlanta
On Interstate 85
Feelin' sick and dirty
More dead than alive
Got into a fight
Outside the pizza house
Kicked in a window
And how I wish it'd been Spider's mouth.

Well, they say a man can carry a gun
But that don't mean he's got to kill
I got myself so sluiced that night
That I was ready for the wheel.
Liquor, guns and ammo
Gonna be the death of me
Heading down to Peanuts' bar
In Oconee County.

Liquor, guns and ammo
They're all I'll ever need
Found you in a store
On the dark side of misery.

Me and Bobby Bones
We went strolling round the South
I never met anyone quite like you
Until you kissed my mouth.

Liquor, guns and ammo
Be the death of me
I've been this way now
Since nineteen-fifty-three.

Liquor, guns and ammo
They made a man of me
Now all that's left
Is a faded mockery.

So, if you see me now
Down on Clayton Street
Know that for me
Life ain't quite complete
Unless I've got a woman
Hanging by my side
I'm going down to the Winchester House
To find myself a bride.

Liquor, guns and ammo
Be the death of me
I've been this way now
Since nineteen-fifty-three.

Liquor, guns and ammo
They made a man of me
But now all that's left
Is a faded mockery.

Penicillin

Penicillin, that's all I need.
Penicillin, it'll cure me.
Penicillin, that's all I need.
Penicillin, it'll cure me.

I went to my master
Down in the docks
He said, "What do you want?"
Well, I told him what I'd got
He said, "You'll lose it
If you take some of this."
So I went back home
And engraved it on your kiss;

Penicillin, that's all I need.
Penicillin, it'll cure me.

Caught a plane from London
Underneath the hill
I found you waiting
By the old water-mill
The ghost of a horse
Was tattooed on your arm
Y'said you caught me coughin'
I said I didn't mean no harm.

Penicillin, it's all I need.
Penicillin, it'll cure me.
Penicillin, that's all I need.
Penicillin, God knows it'll cure me.

Went back to my master
Down in the docks
I said "I feel quite good
But something ate my rocks."
He looked into my eyes
And he looked into my heart
Said "If you don't take this
You're gonna end up on the cart."

The Rolling Of The Hearse

Well, I went up to the jury
And I said, "What is the cost
For forgetting you ever saw me,
I can replace what has been lost?
Don't believe all the things they say,
It's only going to get worse."
But they just looked straight through me
And they muttered out their curse.

I was taken from the courtroom
And chained into a cell,
And the straw that I slept on
Was the only thing I knew well.
But, I didn't believe
Things could get worse,
Until I heard them building the scaffold
And the rolling of the hearse.

They took me from my prison
Out into the cold grey dawn
And the faces at ev'ry window
Were as silent as the corn.
Then they put me on the scaffold
And told me to close my eyes,
But I saw Gabriel coming
And I vanished from their sight.

The prison yard it is empty,
The guards have all gone home,
The hearse it stands forgotten
And the wind whispers my song.
